What is a TENS Electrical Nerve Stimulation

Seekers for alternative pain relief from oral medication will encounter Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) as a suggestion often. What is TENS electrical nerve stimulation, and why do physical therapists and medical professionals recommend it?

TENS electrical nerve stimulation is a form of therapy that employs low-voltage currents to provide instant pain relief. However, do not be alarmed with seeing the words ‘voltage’ or ‘electrical’. They may seem threatening at first, but they are soothing, with the relaxing tingling sensations they provide. The iTENS is a wireless version of a TENS machine. It has electrode gel pads that act as a conduit for the electricity to pass through the skin to the nerves. Once the electrical currents reach the nerves, it stimulates the production of endorphins, also known as the body’s natural painkillers. Another purpose of a TENS machine is to block the transmission of pain signals through electrical stimulation from reaching the brain and the spinal cord.

TENS Electrical Nerve Stimulation: Uses

Not to be confused with other forms of electrotherapy like Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS), TENS electrical nerve stimulation targets the nerves for sensory feedback. TENS can treat all kinds of acute and chronic pain in the body, such as the shoulder, neck, back, legs, thighs, and feet. It is also known to relieve period pains, cluster headaches, arthritis, fibromyalgia, sciatica, and tendonitis. The TENS machine can also act as a stimulator or massager for tired feet. It helps in relaxing tensed joints and boost blood circulation. Devices, like the iTENS, mainly affect the nerves and do not cause substantial muscle contraction.

Risks of TENS Device

TENS electrical nerve stimulation is generally safe and toxic-free. TENS is a favourable drug-free alternative to pain relief because it does not carry the typical side effects or allergic reactions that oral painkillers may have. The most that one can get from a TENS unit is skin redness and irritation from the adhesive gel pads if left for too long. When this happens, wash the skin thoroughly before wearing them again. As a precaution nerve stimulation should not be used on open wounds, on the throat and head, while driving, and near the water. TENS is also not advisable for:

  • Pregnant women
  • Cancer patients
  • Epileptic patients
  • People with cardiac pacemakers

The iTENS is one of the first wireless TENS machines with FDA approval. These devices provide TENS electrical nerve stimulation with Bluetooth connectivity and are compatible with most iOS, Android, and Google phones. Additionally, the iTENS app comes with pre-set modes for different specific treatments for more convenient pain management. You can buy over the counter or online without a prescription needed. Do, however, check with your physician before using one.
