Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive, drug-free approach to pain management commonly used for chronic pain, joint pain and muscle cramps. A traditional TENS device comprises a compact box, a battery-operated stimulator, and two sets of electrodes with connected leads. The iTENS, on the other hand, is a wireless TENS device that you can connect to your mobile phone directly via Bluetooth.
A TENS device generally employs adhesive electrodes attached to the skin’s surface to deliver direct electrical current stimulation that you can adjust in terms of frequency, degree and duration.
The iTENS is a contemporary electrotherapy device that combines innovation with the proven effects of “TENS therapy” to deliver effective and long-lasting pain management through your Android or Apple smartphones and can also be used manually.
The frequency of the impulse emitted from your TENS device will determine the type of pain relief that you experience. There are two main groupings of frequencies used in TENS, low (<10 Hz) or high (>50 Hz).
Low frequencies will stimulate the body to release chemicals and endorphins into the bloodstream to help the user feel better.
High frequencies are what is known as pain gating. This is the body sending electrical impulses up the spine instead of pain signals whereby masking the pain.
Low frequencies will take longer to have an effect but will last longer once the TENS device is removed. High frequencies are fast-acting, but the effect tends to diminish quicker once the TENS device is removed.
TENS can treat a variety of pain symptoms and conditions, such as:
Systematic Pain
- Bursitis
- Causalgia
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Neuralgia
- Osteoarthritis Phantom Limb Syndrome
- Reynaud’s Syndrome
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Synovitis
- Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy
Abdominal Pain
- Diverticulitis
- Dysmenorrheal Labour
- Post-operative Pain
Back Pain
- Facet Syndrome
- Intercostals Neuralgia
- IVD Syndrome
- Lumbago
- Lumbosacral Pain Radiculitis
- Sprains or Strains
- Thoracodynia
- Whole Back Pain
Pain in the Lower Extremities
- Ankle Pain
- Foot Pain
- Fractures
- Ischialgia
- Knee Pain Passive Stretch Pain
- Sciatica
- Sprains or Strains
- Tendonitis
- Thrombophlebitis
Pain in the Upper Extremities
- Epicondylitis
- Frozen Shoulder
- Hand Pain
- Peripheral Nerve Injury
- Sprains or Strains
- Subdeltoid Bursitis
- Wrist Pain
If positioned and set correctly without worn electrodes, you should feel pain relief from a quality TENS product within 15 minutes.
TENS can be administered any time of day or night. It is recommended that TENS not be used while sleeping. Movement during sleep may cause electrodes to come off or be pressed into the skin, causing skin irritation or treatment jolts.
To achieve the best results with your iTENS therapy device, start by placing the device directly over or around the painful area. For best results, you may need to vary the placement of the electrodes with alternate placement patterns such as above, below or around the pain point.
When using the iTENS to treat the wrist or ankle, make sure the device is placed lengthwise, as a wrap-around may be too sharp of a contour.
Search “iTENS” via Google Play (Android) or App Store (iOS)
Yes, the iTENS can be used without the app. It has 2 x brail-type buttons on the device (the white round part) that turn the intensity up or down. Often people using the iTENS will select their preferred treatment program via the app and then turn the device off. Next time the device is turned on, it automatically saves which program was last used and can therefore alleviate the need for using the app.
No, you should not have to pair the iTENS device to your app with every use. Make sure that once the device is paired, use the on-app screen to control the device, including turning the device on and off. The centre button acts as a hard reset/pairing button, do not use the button on the device to turn it off, or it will reset your pairing settings.
The device is in pairing mode, or it means you need to change your batteries. The blinking red indicates a low battery.
The gel pads can be used for 15-20 sessions. Beyond this point, the quality of stimulation will diminish. To enhance the gel pad’s stickiness, dab a few drops of water onto the gel to rehydrate the gel pad. Dry it out before applying it to the skin.
Never touch the gel with your fingertips. This can be achieved by pulling the wing away from the skin’s surface while holding the middle of the wing. Excessive oil, moisturisers, and perspiration will affect the gel pads’ ability to adhere properly.
You should always clean the treatment area with soap and water and trim excessive hair before applying the iTENS to ensure optimal adhesion. The number of uses you can gain from the gel pads will vary, primarily due to skin preparation. Humidity can also affect the lifespan. Proper storage of the gel pads is also essential.
The wings will last approximately six months. However, it ultimately depends on how much or how little you use your device. The wings will begin to wear and tear after many uses. Once the wings get worn, you will begin to notice that the intensity is not as effective, and the sensation of stimulation has severely weakened. At this time, we advise wing replacement.
The iTENS device uses an energy-efficient rechargeable lithium-ion battery.
The lithium-ion battery will last approximately 24 hours before needing to be charged, depending on the intensity.
The iTENS should be stored in the supplied zip lock poly bag so that the gel pads stay dry. Always keep the gel pads covered with clear plastic film and stored in a zip lock bag to achieve the longest lifespan possible.
Although TENS is commonly used in hospitals during delivery, we do not recommend using the iTENS during the early stages of pregnancy or whilst asleep.
We suggest not placing the iTENS on the following:
- front or sides of the neck
- temples
- mouth
- eyes
- chest and upper back (at the same time)
- varicose veins
- broken, irritated, inflamed, numb or infected skin
The iTENS can be worn every day. The device does not have to be removed between stimulation treatments. However, it is recommended to take rests between therapy stimulation sessions and to check the skin under the pad periodically for redness.
iTENS gel pads are single-use and should not be shared between people. The iTENS device, on the other hand, can be used by other people with proper cleaning of the device and new gel pads applied.
