Can Using a TENS Unit Be Harmful?

Pain management can take many forms. The most common ways of dealing with pain are over-the-counter medications, physical therapy, light exercise, acupuncture, and electrotherapy. One of the common types of electrotherapies for pain relief is Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS). Can using a TENS unit be harmful? A TENS machine uses low-voltage electrical impulses to direct the body’s nerves to block pain signals. A TENS unit is generally safe and has no adverse side effects. The wireless iTENS is an effective alternative to a traditional TENS machine for pain management.

Therapists and doctors use TENS therapy to treat their patients who have chronic pain or are undergoing rehabilitation. A TENS unit has a set of electrode pads that can be attached to the skin to facilitate electrical stimulation. The electrode pads deliver the electrical currents to stimulate the nerve fibres to block pain and release more endorphins. Can using a TENS unit be harmful if it uses electricity? A TENS unit is a non-invasive form of therapy and has minimal risks. When you use the TENS unit, the currents are firm but not uncomfortable. You can set the machine at the lowest frequency and increase it gradually as your body adapts to the stimulation. However, be careful not to suddenly turn the intensity too high as it may over-stimulate the nerves.

When and How Can Using a TENS Unit Be Harmful?

Can using a TENS unit be harmful if used frequently? Unlike oral analgesics, the use of machines like the iTENS does not have adverse side effects or reactions. It is an ideal form of therapy for chronic pain. A TENS unit is best while you are doing work or physical activities. You can use it as many times in a day as you want but keep in mind to have regular breaks in between. Do not place the electrode pads longer than the recommended time (20-60 minutes) as a precautionary measure. Prolonged use of a TENS unit may cause redness or skin irritation. If skin irritation occurs, switch the device off first, then carefully remove the gel pads from the skin. Wash the skin thoroughly with mild soap and water.

When can using a TENS unit be harmful? There are times that TENS treatment is not suitable for a person. For instance, it’s not advisable to use TENS if you are pregnant, have cancer, epilepsy, or have a cardiac pacemaker in your body. Additionally, do not use TENS while driving, sleeping, or near a body of water. iTENS has FDA approval as a safe wireless TENS device for treating pain. Check with a doctor or therapist on the proper and secure way of using a TENS unit.
