TENS Unit Frequency Setting Guide

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) can be overwhelming for a first-time user. TENS therapy is a popular alternative for effective pain relief without the need for oral medication. It can treat pain in the back, shoulders, arms, and feet. Different pain comes with different settings. There are things to consider, such as placement guides, TENS unit frequency setting, or setting up a TENS machine. But do not fret if you’re using TENS for the first time. It is easy to familiarize yourself with the TENS therapy once you have it in your hands.

TENS therapy uses low-voltage electrical currents to stimulate the nerves to block pain signals. Electrical stimulation is known to reduce sensory pain by instigating the temporary closure of the neural gate in the nervous system. The gate acts as a controller for pain signals to cross through to the brain. Once the gate is closed and the pain signals blocked, the body feels less pain. A traditional TENS unit is a small portable device with a set of lead wires and electrodes attachable to the skin. iTENS, on the other hand, is a wireless device that can be controllable via Bluetooth in the smartphone. From the iTENS app, you can select your treatment from the pre-set settings, or you can adjust the TENS unit frequency to your desired levels.

TENS Unit Frequency: iTENS Settings

You must find the right setting for your specific condition. The most common TENS unit parameters to consider are Pre-set Settings, Intensity Level, and Timing or Duration. The pulse rate, duration, and frequency are ready for each specific treatment in the Pre-Set modes. The TENS unit frequency has high and low frequencies. Setting the pulse rate or the frequency will depend on the kind of pain. Acute pain works best with high frequency, while chronic pain is most effective in lower frequency.

Since each person reacts differently to pain treatment, a custom setting may be better. It is safe, to begin with the lowest TENS unit frequency when starting TENS treatment for the first time. Slowly work your way up until you reach the optimal settings of pain relief. With wireless iTENS, you can easily administer pain relief by yourself. For best results, check with your doctor or physician on the proper use and guidance of the TENS machine.
