Using TENS for Acute Pain

When our body feels pain, it indicates that something is wrong, and we must naturally stop what caused it. Sudden injuries or common illnesses can cause acute pain. Unlike chronic pain, which lasts longer (no less than six months), acute pain can come suddenly without warning. Although acute pain is short-lived, it could still be irritating. Many people suffering from acute pain use Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) to alleviate pain. Using TENS for acute pain is a safe and drug-free way to free one’s body from agony.

Why TENS Machine

The TENS treatment is an electrotherapy pain management method that deals with sending a small number of electrical currents to the neurons to stop pain temporarily. The TENS machine is a small device attached across the skin that targets the nerves to override the pain signals from reaching the brain. It also stimulates the release of endorphins in the body, which act as a natural painkiller. The iTENS is a wireless TENS machine that is very versatile in treating all kinds of pain. The wing-like pads of iTENS come in small and large sizes, making them the perfect TENS for acute pain anywhere in the body.

TENS for Acute Pain: Instructions for Using TENS

The cause of acute pain is specific and can vary widely from broken bones, cuts or burns, childbirth to post-surgical pain. The usual setting of TENS for acute pain has a high frequency. Depending on where the body hurts, place the pads near or around the area of pain. Turn on the TENS unit and set it to the recommended pulse rate is between 80 to 120Hz. Higher frequency is known to be most effective for acute pain. Check the placement guide of TENS for correct usage. Setting up devices like the wireless iTENS unit would seem more straightforward than other devices mainly because of the pre-set settings of the machines already available in the iTENS app.

People who wish to avoid oral painkillers due to their side effects choose TENS for acute pain as a drug-free alternative. The iTENS has the FDA’s approval as a wireless medical device because it can effectively and safely treat many acute and chronic pains. It is virtually safe and non-invasive. Although TENS is generally safe, there are some instances where TENS therapy is not advisable. Do not use a TENS machine in the following cases:

  • On open wounds
  • During pregnancy (Near abdominal area)
  • Near or on the head
  • People with epilepsy
  • People with an artificial cardiac pacemaker

For faster pain relief and healing, you can use TENS for acute pain alone or in combination with other treatment options. Remember to seek medical advice on the proper use of TENS for your specific condition before administering self-treatment.
